Statutory Sick Pay Explained

All workers are entitled to payment of statutory sick pay (SSP). However, there are certain conditions governing the payment of SSP and they are as follows:

During the 8 weeks prior to being off work, the Temporary Worker will have had to have earned no less than the lower earnings limit for the payment of NIC (National Insurance Contribution). This is subject to change annually.

The Temporary Worker has to be off work for 4 or more working days (Mon-Fri.) in a row. These 4 days are called PIW which means Period of Incapacity to Work.

If the Temporary Worker is off sick, the first 3 days are the qualifying days and there is no entitlement to payment for these days. The first day of sick leave for which there is entitlement to claim SSP is the fourth day & the first day after the qualifying period.

In order to qualify for SSP bbu must be informed of the sickness immediately. This is called notification of sickness and is the starting point for Statutory Sick Pay. The day bbu is notified is the beginning of the PIW and will be the first day of the qualifying period as long as the total period of sickness is 4 days or more.

The Temporary Worker must follow up the notification of sickness by completing a self-certificate for sickness periods of 4 – 7 working days. These forms will be supplied by bbu on request.

The Temporary Worker must supply a doctor’s certificate in order to qualify for payment of SSP.

The current rate of pay for SSP is £89.35 per week or £17.87 per day. This is also subject to change according to government legislation.
